With the development of Chinese and Western cultures, more and more people go to different countries for exchanging and learning. So knowing more about the differences becomes so necessary.

First, Western people express themselves directly, while Chinese act oppositely (相反地). Chinese are implicative (含蓄的) most of the time. When Chinese get angry or unsatisfied (不满的), most of them will say nothing. But if you are unsatisfied with a foreigner, you need to speak it out. Don’t hide your feelings because he or she doesn’t like it or can’t understand your thoughts.

Second, the value about things is different between Chinese and Western people. Chinese seem to be more worried about tomorrow, while Western people like to spend tomorrow’s money in advance. Western people believe that they should enjoy themselves at the moment and tomorrow is another day. So they enjoy everything they have now, having no clear plans for the future.

But remember, there is no judgement (评判) about which one is better. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. We just need to know the differences and learn to understand each other. Every country’s culture has its own special meaning. What we need to do is to respect (尊重) each other’s culture and gel along with each other peacefully.

1. What should we do if we are unsatisfied with a foreigner?

A.Say nothing to him or her.B.Get away from him or her.C.Try to understand him or her.D.Speak out our thoughts to him or her.

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Foreigners like saving money for the future.B.Chinese people express themselves directly.C.Foreigners would like to spend “today” excellently.D.Foreigners are used to preparing for the future carefully.

3. Which of the following explains the underlined sentence “

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

in the last paragraph?

A.Point out a foreigner’s mistakes directly.B.Encourage foreigners to learn our culture.C.Try our best to find the best culture in the world.D.Respect each other’s culture and get along with each other peacefully.

4. What is the correct structure of the passage? (Paragraph 1=①)

How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.

How about touching people? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all!

Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.

And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

As the host, it’s polite to welcome the foreign students. To help them know our customs well, we’d better prepare some handbooks with Chinese etiquette as gifts. From the handbooks, they may know what to do when they meet Chinese people first, and also how to behave at the table and what they are supposed to do when visiting Chinese friends. What’s more, we plan to organize a welcome party in which we’ll communicate better with each other.

【推荐3】Different cultures have different ways to meet and greet people. For example, in many Asian countries, it is polite to shake hands as a greeting. In Western countries, between close friends, people greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. When traveling in another country, just do as the Romans do.

After greeting another person you need to find something good to talk about. The best thing is to look around and talk about your situation. Are you at a party? Talk about the party. Are you in school? Talk about the school. It is not a good idea to ask very personal(私人的) questions when you meet someone for the first time. When you know a person very well, you may bring up questions like a person’s age.

1. In many Asian countries, it is impolite to shake hands.
2. “Do as the Romans do” means “入乡随俗” in Chinese.
3. The better thing is not to talk about your situation.
