The Clif Bar Headquarters transformed a World War II valve manufacturing facility into a workplace haven for the outdoor enthusiasts at Clif Bar. As an adaptive reuse LEED-Platinum project, it features an open office working environment; onsite childcare; a theater space; a café; and an employee wellness area with a yoga room, dance studio, weight room, bouldering wall, shower/locker facilities and access to five onsite fitness trainers, two massage rooms and a hair salon.

This was one of the first buildings to comply with California's new energy efficiency standards, the toughest in the nation. It includes the first “smart” solar array in North America over 500 kWh, providing 100% of the office electricity. Clif Bar provides all employees with 30 minutes of paid time to exercise each day, and its Cool Commute program has also helped 42 employees purchase hybrid or biodiesel cars, raising their fuel efficiency.

The 2-story open office is flooded with natural light, and four interior gardens deliver bright sunlight, fresh air and rain to the plants and greenery inside. These courtyards and a series of living walls subdivide work areas, while at the same time providing beauty, inspiration and a physical connection to the outdoors.

Green Features

This project is LEED-CI Platinum certified.

One of the largest photovoltaic arrays on a Communal Building in North America fulfilling almost all of Clif-Bar’s power needs was enhanced by panels able to generate 6-8% more power than a standard PV array.

A solar hot water system that supplies 70% of the hot water needs for Clif-Bar’s test kitchens, showers, cafeteria, multiple kitchens, bathrooms, hair salon and childcare center.

Lighting power efficiency that exceeds Title-24 requirements by 35%.

HVAC efficiencies that exceed Title-24 by 15%.

Extensive reuse of reclaimed wood and FSC lumber. You can still see the bleacher row numbers etched on the underside of the stair risers to the mezzanine, a feature the Clif Bar staff point out when giving tours to show off their new home. Numerous tours are given and requested.

75% of the materials used were repurposed; wood wall panels at the entry reception area and corridors came from wood shipping containers, while the mezzanine floor and conference rooms utilized Terramai (which is visible in the body of this project deion.) The handles to the office and conference room doors are from actual bicycle frames parts, where the manufacturer decals can still be seen.

The Innovation & Design Process (ID)credits pursued were: Exemplary Performance on Optimize Energy Performance -Lighting Power & Recycled Content, as well as Green Cleaning Regimen andGreen Building Education.

Re-purposed bikes, kayaks, snowboards, and surfboards that had passed their useful life as sports equipment, now serve as artwork suspended from the ceiling. These art installations were a unique collaboration between the ZGF design team and Clif Bar and were assembled on site to represent shapes found in nature such as a helix, comet and lotus.

Each art piece was a live experiment, beginning with a fully engineered, computer-modeled concept developed by an in-house artist/model maker. For example, the kayak helix was dynamically spun in place to achieve the desired effect and the bikes in the bike comet were systematically suspended from the ceiling with stainless wire and elevated and shifted to achieve the desired result. Each hanging art piece assists in wayfinding and tells a story about Clif Bar employees or sponsored athletes.

重新设计的自行车、皮划艇、滑雪板和冲浪板已经在报废后重新使用，现在则是悬挂在天花板上的艺术品。这些艺术装置是ZGF设计团队和Clif Bar之间的一种独特的合作，并在现场组装，以代表在自然界中发现的形状，如螺旋、彗星和莲花。
