Work–life balance is the balance that an individual needs（定语从句） between time allocated for work and other aspects of life. Areas of life other than work–life can be,but are not limited to, personal interests, family and social or leisure activities.The term ‘Work-Life Balance' is recent in origin, as it was first used in UK and US（原因状语从句） in the late 1970s and 1980s, respectively. More recently the term has drawn on some confusion; this is in part due to recent technological changes and advances that have made work （定语从句）and work objectivespossible to be completed on a 24-hour cycle. The use of smartphones,email, video-chat, and other technological innovations has made it possible to workwithout having a typical "9 to 5 work day"

在4月11日阿里内部交流活动上，马云就网友热议的996工作制发表了自己的观点。

他说：“能做996是一种巨大的福气，很多公司、很多人想996都没有机会（it is a huge blessing that we can work 996）。”

“If you do not do 996 when you are young, when will you? Do you think never having to work 996 in your life is an honour to boast about?” he said. “If you don’t put out more time and energy than others, how can you achieve the success you want?”

马云说：“如果你年轻的时候不996，你什么时候可以996？你一辈子没有996，你觉得你就很骄傲了？你不付出超越别人的努力和时间，你怎么能够实现你想要的成功？”

马云在讲话中表示，“今天中国BAT（百度、阿里、腾讯）这些公司能够996，我认为是我们这些人修来的福报。……我不要说996，到今天为止，我肯定是12x12以上。”

Ma defended 996, saying such a schedule has helped Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent grow to become what they are today, drawing on his own experience of working long hours in the industry. He went on to call on his employees to dedicate themselves to the work ethic.

马云为996辩护，认为这种工作制度让阿里巴巴、腾讯等中国科技巨头有了如今的成就，同时以自己在这一行业加班加点的经历为佐证。他接着鼓励员工也以这种职业道德为标杆而奋斗。

他说：

“If you join Alibaba, you should get ready to work 12 hours a day, otherwise why do you come to Alibaba? We do not need those who comfortably work 8 hours.”

加入阿里，你要做好准备一天12个小时，否则你来阿里干什么？我们不缺8小时上班很舒服的人。

这一番话引发网友激烈讨论，反对和批评声不绝于耳。

4月12日，马云通过新浪微博做出解释：“任何公司不应该，也不能强制员工996；阿里巴巴从来也都提倡，认真生活，快乐工作！但是年轻人自己要明白，幸福是奋斗出来的！不为996辩护，但向奋斗者致敬！”

"Any company should not, and cannot, force employees to keep a 996 work schedule," Jack Ma wrote in a follow-up post on his own personal Weibo account on Friday. "Alibaba has always advocated, living your life with gusto and being happy at work. But young people, themselves, must understand that happiness is a struggle! Not defending 996, but do pay tribute to the fighters!"

14日，马云再发微博，解释自己的观点，他认为关于“996对不对”，法律自有规定，但这个问题并不是关键，关键是人们有没有认真思考人生的意义和奋斗的方向。

他写道：

"If you find a job you like, the 996 problem does not exist; if you're not passionate about it, every minute of going to work is a torment."

找到喜欢的事，不存在996这个问题；如果不喜欢不热爱，上班每分钟都是折磨。

"No one likes working at a company that forces you to do '996'. Not only is it inhumane, it's unhealthy and even more unsustainable for long periods – plus workers, relatives and the law do not approve of it. In the long term, even if you pay a higher salary, employees will all leave."

没有人喜欢在一个强制996的企业里工作，既不人道，也不健康，更难以持久，而且员工、家人、法律都不允许。长期那样，即使你付再多工资，员工也会跑光。

然而在马云的帖文下，大多数人并不赞同他的观点。
