The love for barbecuing is the reason many people step into their backyards, or onto their decks, patios, or balconies. Grills and outdoor kitchens make nearby dining tables a necessity, at least during the warmer months of the year.

Whether your outdoor space is a city balcony or a sprawling ranch with enviable planting areas, outdoor dining is a much-anticipated ritual and pastime during the summer and warmer months of the year. At the first sign of spring, draw inspiration from restaurants that transition from sidewalks or courtyards to outdoor cafés. It’s one of life’s simple pleasures.

Transforming your backyard or patio into a dining area requires little effort - just common sense and planning. Follow these design ideas and tips to enhance the experience for you and your guests.

The Size of the Space Determines the Table's Location

If your yard is a balcony or another type of limited outdoor space, the location of your dining table and possible grill is almost entirely up to you. A larger yard means you have more options, although you’ll want to consider some important points before tossing a granite table far under an oak tree.

If the kitchen is indoors, it’s best to place the outdoor table nearby for convenience. Make sure the table is not too close to the charcoal grill or smoker. Provide space for guests to move between the outdoor kitchen, dining table, and buffet table.

Choose the Right Location

Laying out the right area for your outdoor dining table should be seen as an opportunity to design a space around your lifestyle, rather than designing your lifestyle around the space. Dining outdoors and entertaining guests is one of the true joys of having a home and yard.

Things to Consider

So, where do you put that patio table? If space isn’t too limited - like on a city balcony - you need to consider several factors:

It makes sense to be near the outdoor kitchen or grilling area, although you don’t want to be around the charcoal grill or smoker. If the kitchen is indoors, it’s best to place the outdoor table nearby for convenience. If meals are prepared indoors, you’ll want the dining table to be close by. Perhaps not facing the kitchen wall outside. In summer, outdoor walls can get very hot, like vertical surfaces of hot eggs.

Plan Your Placement

Other factors will affect the location of your patio table and chairs. Things to consider:

Choose a site near the door for easy access. Consider quick trips to the kitchen and bathroom. A buffet table or bar is a convenient way for guests to serve themselves, adding to the informality of the outdoor dining experience and freeing up space on the dining table. Ensure there’s enough space to accommodate guests and the buffet table or bar without crowding. Rule: about 4 feet between the buffet table or bar and the outdoor dining table. You want your guests to have fun. But if someone gets louder as they become more relaxed (enjoying), will the patio table be close to your child’s bedroom? If you find a table next to a fence that isolates your space from neighbors, will noise be an issue? Design a layout that makes everyone happy.

Set the Dining Table

Depending on the situation, you can go informal or fun.

Outdoor tablecloths are festive and can hide imperfect tables. Outdoor dinnerware is a more eco-friendly solution than paper plates and can be used for years. Patterns and solids are often made of melamine - but not Grandma's Melmac. Plastic utensils can be washed and reused, or you can use regular stainless steel or silver if you prefer. Choose drinkware suitable for outdoor use. Broken glasses can be a mood killer.

Look for Shade

You can have the most expensive, beautiful outdoor dining table on this earth, but if it sits in the middle of a concrete patio in the desert, under the sun, no one will come. Provide shade and shelter in the form of outdoor umbrellas, awnings, sails, or a gazebo.

If your deck or patio has a roof, you can dine outdoors at any time. Otherwise, you can shade the dining table with an umbrella or use a pergola with a tent-like roof. Another idea: dine as the sun sets, and you won’t have to worry about providing shade.

Tables with a View

What’s the view like in your yard? If you live on a hilltop, gazing from the outdoor dining table, the world below can look dazzling at night. What about the view inside the yard? Do you have a beautiful garden, pool, or bright water feature? Find a dining table where you can enjoy various amenities in your own scenery. Perhaps your house has many windows, and the view from the backyard looks lovely when the night lights are soft.

Choose the Right Patio Furniture

If you have a beautiful outdoor dining table and matching chairs, all you need to do is maintain and clean it. Are you planning to buy an outdoor dining set soon? Ask yourself these questions before purchasing:

How many people will use it: Is it suitable for your family, extended family, friends? What shape do you prefer: Oval, round, rectangular, or square? Does the shape and size fit the space you want? Oversized furniture can dwarf an already small space. Similarly, too small furniture can look like it’s floating or lost in a larger space. Comfort: Are dining chairs your main seating in your outdoor space? If so, you may want to consider dining chairs with cushions. Chairs can serve as seating near the pool or fire pit. Style: If you’re starting from scratch - good for you. What style does your house or apartment have? Georgian, Craftsman, or modern? None of the above? Look at your indoor decor and what you like, then look outdoors. Or surprise everyone - including yourself - and do something unexpected and completely opposite to what’s happening indoors to change the look. It’s time to go out and let down your well-known hair.

Mix and Match Furniture

You’re dining outside; it’s informal. There are no strict rules that the table must match the chairs, and all chairs must match. Even Martha Stewart might approve of a mix of styles and types of chairs. Some people seek a look and think it eclectic. Others have purchased many patio chairs or tables over the years or are passionate about vintage outdoor furniture.

Poolside Dining

If the pool is well-maintained and there’s space, dining near the pool or water feature can be serene and elegant. Water has a way of doing that. Just make sure to turn off the robotic cleaner and other noisy features that can kill the mood. Adding effects like color-changing lights and pool fountains are some extra features that can enhance your outdoor dining experience.

Use Indoor Tables Outdoors

If your indoor dining equipment is not heavy and extremely expensive or valuable, pull it outside under a large tree to make the occasion special. Decorate with tablecloths, centerpieces, and lighting.

Consider Size

Make sure your furniture isn’t too large to fit the designated outdoor space. Large and comfortable deep seating sets are popular, but if your guests don’t have space to move in and out of chairs or around the table, they’re not usable. Measure the space before purchasing dining furniture. Less, sometimes smaller, is the smarter way.

Accessible Dining

Do any of your guests use wheelchairs, walkers, or canes? Be mindful and make necessary changes so they can move around easily. This will include paths wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, space around tables for smooth entry and exit, and flat surfaces.

Atmosphere

Over the years, people can remember the emotions generated by outdoor dining experiences. This doesn’t mean your drunken uncle or whimsical niece throwing a fit. Help create a pleasant evening outdoors. Some ideas:

Music: A little evening music is always nice, especially something to help guests relax and chat. Centerpieces: Low items so guests can see each other. Pick something from the garden: fresh flowers, leaves, a bowl of fruit or vegetables, perhaps a bouquet of fresh herbs. Drinks: Martinis, wine, beer, iced tea, or anything else your guests enjoy. Don’t know? Find out in advance.

Keep Insects Away

Ah, summer bugs. Fireflies and ladybugs are welcome, but mosquitoes can ruin a lovely outdoor evening. Citronella oil candles are decorative, provide light, and can deter a few mosquito bites. If you’re lucky enough to have (or can buy) a fountain, the moving water can help keep some insects away while providing fresh air. Cover plates or individual dishes with special netting devices. Some gazebos have mosquito net-like curtains. Provide insect repellent for your guests, but don’t use it on the dining table.
