Marli

Reformation

Wolf & Lamb

SSustainable report - The luxury upcycling brands changing sustainable fashion

Waste not, want not – it’s the newest fashion trend that’s borrowing from the past to inspire the future. Motivated by Fashion Revolution activists, slow fashion, or anti-trend collections are moving away from the constructs of mass production in a bid to snap high street fashion out of its consumerist coma. Turning bargain bin rejects and factory off cuts into sartorial diamonds from the rough, a rare subset of sartorialists are finding inspiration in the most unexpected of places…

Motivated by the shocking statistics that mark the fashion industry as one of the most polluting and detrimental businesses on the planet, a breakthrough subculture of sustainable brands are innovating to create clothing with a difference. Working to reduce waste and revitalise domestic markets with up-skilling initiatives, a more thoughtful approach to everyday style is helping to create a more meaningful attitude towards aesthetics.

Turning by-products into statement pieces, the fashion world has got a thrifty new attitude. Check out the three breakthrough brands leading the charge…

Marli

Rooting around in the bins of Paris’s finest couture houses, Marli’s founder, Amélie Prêtre, stumbled on a fabulous idea. Creating bespoke bags out of unwanted fabric, the French Kickstarter brand isn’t just making something out of nothing, they’re also giving people opportunities to aspire, offering employment and skills to the city’s disabled workforce. One of a kind in every way, each piece from Marli is dutifully designed based on fabrics that are found in old fripperies, dug out of discarded fabric bins and donated by ateliers from all over the fashion capital. Inspired by the opulence and originality of each fabric, every design is an ode to economy; saving something special from the trash heap and reworking it for its new purpose.

Reformation

We’ve all heard of reclaimed vintage, but what do you call it when an unwanted garment takes on a wholly new appearance? Reformation. The brand based out of Los Angeles that is changing the idea of upcycled clothing, Reformation is attending to the swathes of unused or unsold fabric with an edgy, millennial vibe. The brainchild of Yael Aflalo, a woman who used to spend her days creating private collections for Urban Outfitters, the retail giant dissident now counts cool girls like Rhianna, Karlie Kloss and Jeanne Damas as loyal friends of the brand. Offering an honest explanation of how each piece has impacted the planet, with the aim to lower the carbon and water footprint to zero, Reformation is creating fashion-conscious collections from deadstock fabric with serious A-lister potential.

Wolf & Lamb

Imagine if Sophie Amorouso had stuck to re-purposing vintage fashion, maybe her business might look a little something like Wolf & Lamb, the badass biker jacket brand with a difference. Scouring the United States in the search for lost and found designs, Alison Reynolds wants your unused and underappreciated leather lovelies! Inspired by her parents’ collection of authentic leather jackets, Reynolds preserves the provenance of old-skool statement pieces with a contemporary edge, deconstructing designs with a modern fit. Embracing a green point of view, each silhouette is unpicked and put back together in the heart of L.A, improving its sustainability status and providing jobs within the community. Whether you are hunting for a classic, black motorcycle jacket, a sharp, bright white fringe racer, or a super soft, caramel suede mini trench coat, you will be selecting a one-of-a-kind, luxury leather item; one that transcends trends and serves all seasons.
