Living Chan—Preamble

生活禅开题

满目青山是禅,茫茫大地是禅;浩浩长江是禅,潺潺流水是禅;青青翠竹是禅,郁郁黄花是禅;满天星斗是禅,皓月当空是禅;骄阳似火是禅,好风徐来是禅;皑皑白雪是禅,细雨无声是禅。

Verdant mountain is Chan, endless horizon is Chan; rumbling Yangtze is Chan, gurgling stream is Chan; green bamboo is Chan, yellow daisy is Chan; starry sky is Chan, clear moon is Chan; burning sun is Chan, cooling breeze is Chan; virgin snow is Chan, murmuring drizzle is Chan.

空灵是禅,含蓄是禅,淡雅是禅,向上是禅,向善是禅,超越是禅。

Spiritual immanence is Chan, subtlety is Chan, simplicity is Chan, elevation is Chan, wholesomeness is Chan, transcendence is Chan.

我们的生活充满着禅意和禅机,所谓“神通及妙用,运水与搬柴”,但大多数人由于自我封闭,意识不到他本身具有体验禅的潜能,这就叫做“百姓日用而不知”。

Living is imbued with Chan in terms of its meaning and experience, hence the saying “supernormal powers and amazing abilities, (do exist in) carrying water and moving firewood”. It is only due to shutting off oneself that one’s potential is not known.

但尽凡心,无别胜解。

Once your mind for the mundane is through, there is nothing more important to know.

春有百花秋有月,夏有凉风冬有雪,若无闲事挂心头,便是人间好时节。

Spring has hundreds of flowers in bloom, autumn has its moon; summer has its cooling breezes, winter has its snow. When not a trifling worry’s in mind, a good season is around.

我们的生活到处充满着禅意与禅境,我们每个人本来都应该生活得非常轻松愉快、潇洒自在,但我们大多数人并没有这种感受,相反地,都觉得生活得很累很累。是什么原因呢?实在是我们的“闲事”太多太多了,所以才觉得“人间”没有“好时节”。

Chan is everywhere to be found in our daily living, be it a feeling or state of being. Every one of us should be living cheerily and at ease, free from any bondage. However, it is unlikely that any of us feel this way. On the contrary, we often find ourselves living in a drag, feeling lethargic and worn out. Have you ever wondered why? It is because we have too many trivial worries that bother us, and this would never give us ‘a good season’.

睡觉时“不千般计较”

净慧长老如是说:

有源律师问慧海禅师:“和尚修道还用功否?”师曰:“用功。”曰:“如何用功?”师曰:“饥来吃饭,困来即眠。”曰:“一切人总如是,同师用功否?”师曰:“不同。”曰:“何故不同?”师曰:“他吃饭时不肯吃饭,百种须索;睡时不肯睡,千般计较。所以不同。”禅者的吃饭、睡觉与一般人的吃饭、睡觉有着这样大的差距,这就是我们还不能在穿衣吃饭的日常生活体验禅的根本症结所在。我们如果去掉吃饭时的“百种须索”和睡觉时的“千般计较”,我们当下就可以与历代禅师同一鼻孔出气。

实践说明:

建议大家跟着每晚的打烊指导与晨起铃声练习。

①晚上莫熬夜;

②回向整日修习,提起偈子“以时寝息,当愿众生;身得安隐,心无动乱”;

③睡前小坐须臾,将一天心念归整;

④作光明想,作起想,吉祥卧,持佛号(圣号)入睡;

⑤醒时提起佛号(圣号);

⑥醒时提起偈子“睡眠始寤,当愿众生,一切智觉,周顾十方”。

This method of Chan cultivation is Living Chan, whereby we would have to continuously observe and contemplate our body and mind as they really are. We need to be mindful every moment, acutely aware of our every move. We must also apply right view to every instant of living and watch over every present moment with clarity of mind. This is Living Chan.

在我们日常生活中,不断地观照自己身心的实相,对自己的一举一动念念分明,分分秒秒在在处处提起正见、安住正念、观照当下,这便是生活禅。
