《生活禅钥》这本小册子，结集了从1991年至2007年这十五年左右的一些文章和讲话稿，记录了我在这期间探索佛法与禅在当代传播过程中如何面对时代、贴近生活、觉悟人生、奉献人生的思想轨迹。这期间讲得最多的是生活禅，因此，这本小册子就算是了解生活禅的一把钥匙。

Preface

Living Chan is the practice and application of Chan in daily life, and its cultivation is within everyday living for realization of its tenet “to awaken to life, and offer a life of service and contribution”. Its main content is to“cultivate within living, and live within cultivation”, with particular emphasis on the importance of arresting each present moment of thought. Awakening is within the here and now, making contribution is within the here and now, cultivation is within the here and now, realization is within the here and now, being positively impacted is within the here and now, preserving for perpetuation what has been attained in cultivation is within the here andnow.

生活禅开题

所谓生活禅，即将禅的精神、禅的智慧普遍地融入生活，在生活中实现禅的超越，体现禅的意境、禅的精神、禅的风采。提倡生活禅的目的在于将佛教文化与中国文化相互熔铸以后产生的具有中国文化特色的禅宗精神，还其灵动活泼的天机，在人间的现实生活中运用禅的方法，解除现代人生活中存在的各种困惑、烦恼和心理障碍，使我们的精神生活更充实，物质生活更高雅，道德生活更圆满，感情生活更纯洁，人际关系更和谐，社会生活更祥和，从而使我们趋向智慧的人生，圆满的人生。

Living Chan—Preamble

What is meant by Living Chan is to let the spirit and wisdom of Chan pervade our living thus reifying the ethos and sublimity of Chan to manifest its radiance. The objective of advocating Living Chan is to enliven the Chan that is characteristic of Chinese Buddhism—the welding of Buddhism with Chinese culture. The advocacy is to bring Chan to life through its application in everyday living for the alleviation of spiritual and psychological problems so often encountered in the modern life to make it more spiritually fulfilling, materially uplifting, and morally noble. As such, one’s emotional life would be rendered more pure, human relationships more harmonious and the society more peaceful and auspicious—the way forward towards a life of wisdom and perfection.

生活禅有四个“根本”：第一是菩提心，第二是般若见，第三是息道观，第四才是生活禅。

生活就是禅，“色不异空”，是为文殊的大智法门；禅就是生活，“空不异色”，是为普贤的大行生活。以文殊之大智法门觉悟人生，以普贤之大行法门奉献人生。这就是生活禅、禅生活的精微妙义，全体大用。

Heart Sutra and Living Chan

Living is Chan—“materiality is not other than emptiness”, this is Manjusri’s method of cultivating great wisdom. Chan is living—“emptiness is not other than materiality”, this is Samantabhadra’s way of practicing great deeds. To awaken to life through Manjusri’s method of practicing great wisdom and to offer a life of service and contribution through Samantabhadra’s method of practicing great deeds is manifestation of the amazing depth and breadth of Living Chan.

在修行中生活

“生活禅”的宗旨是觉悟人生、奉献人生，《净行品》中深刻、生动地体现了这种大智慧、大慈悲的崇高的菩萨精神。具体来说，善用其心就是用大智慧觉悟人生，善待一切就是用大慈悲奉献人生。通过时时刻刻地善用其心，就能不断提高自身素质；通过事事处处地善待一切，就能不断和谐自他关系。

Cultivate within Living

Live within Cultivation

The tenet of Living Chan is “to awaken to life and offer a life of service and contribution”, and this is exactly the bodhisattva spirit of great wisdom and compassion as advocated in the Fascicle on Pure Deeds. To be more precise, well employing the mind is “to awaken to life” through great wisdom, and well treating everything is in essence “to offer a life of service and contribution” through great compassion. Well employing the mind at all times could have the quality of our inner being sublimated; well treating everything would allow us to continuously find harmony in relations.

生活与生死

无论在临死的时候，还是现在活着的时候，都要做到“安住当下，一念不生，从容面对，死生一如”。时时刻刻安住在这样一种现法涅槃之中，才是真正地了生脱死，才是禅宗或生活禅所提供的终极关怀的方案。

Living and Life and Death

“Settle peacefully in the present moment, and do not give rise to any thought; lightheartedly confront it, for living and dying are one.” True emancipation from life and death is to peacefully settle within every present moment of nirvana. This is what Living Chan of the Chan School would propose for the “ultimate concern” of life.

This method of Chan cultivation is Living Chan, whereby we would have to continuously observe and contemplate our body and mind as they really are.
