Recently, I have just read this Reading Plan. Interestingly, it is a book about reading books. This book is like an encyclopedia, including an overwhelming list of books, writers and references that the two authors carefully selected. It helps me to learn more about the world great literature since antiquity to the present, revealing a new world to me.
But to be honest, I don’t want to read every one of the books listed. Admittedly, people all have different interests and abilities. As for me, I am not used to reading dramas and overly long poems. It is more enjoyable for me to read line by line without reading footnotes to understand every sentence. This can allow me to simply enjoy its beautiful style and rhyme.
During your reading, you may find some point of views too harsh for your favorite writers. Don’t get mad at the two authors, as they both have sharp personalities. (But personally I believe Mr. Fadiman is sharper than Mr. Major.) However, you cannot deny that they have unique and sometimes new perspectives. I wrote the sentences that strike my heart down in a notebook while reading. Take for example: “All artists rich in imagination, as long as they are great enough, they can be our contemporaries. ” I am sure you can find some shining thoughts in your eyes when you are reading it.
But this book is more than that; it also hides effective ways of thinking. As for me, it is to consider the influence and relations of different subjects on a more global scale. As the two authors are Americans, their opinions can be seen as “western”. It is amazing to learn western opinions to Chinese literature in both ancient and modern times. Take for example: the author mentioned that the thoughts of the Enlightenment Movement in Europe partly originated from the thoughts of Meng Zi, a philosopher of ancient China. I feel a little ashamed that I did not know this relation before I read the book, as I am a Chinese and I have learned about both Meng Zi and the Enlightenment Movement. More ways of thinking and analyzing can be found in the text. During your journey of reading it, you will find these hidden treasures.
I sincerely recommend this book to everyone who loves reading, especially those who major in literature. Students may benefit a lot from the broad range of masterpieces that the book covers and the distinct comments on these books. Also, it suits those who like to read anecdotes of authors perfectly. These interesting life stories make the book more intimate, just like an ongoing conversation between the reader and the writer.
In all, this book is worth your time. I think it helped me a lot, and I may refer to it sometimes after I read some of the books listed in it. Just take the book as a reference for your reading, and take your time to enjoy your reading life. Reading is a lifetime thing. Let’s take it not as a task, but as a source of happiness and encouragement.
